Prince Rogers Nelson, 1958 - 2016, singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, dancer, actor, filmmaker, a guitar virtuoso and multi-instrumentalist known for his genre-crossing work, wide-ranging singing voice, and flamboyant stage appearances. Prince pioneered the late 1970s Minneapolis sound, a funk rock subgenre drawing from synth-pop and new wave. He sold over 100 million records worldwide, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time. He won 7 Grammy Awards, seven Brit Awards, six American Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was also honored with the Grammy President's Merit Award, American Music Awards, and the Billboard Icon Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the UK Music Hall of Fame, and the Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame. In 2016, he was posthumously honored with a Doctor of Humane Letters by the University of Minnesota. Rolling Stone placed him among its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Here is a fabulous piece of Prince rock ’n roll history, an original 4 page contract, 2 pages, front and back, dated 1976, with American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Their contract is designated as a “Standard AFTRA exclusive agency contract under Rule 12-B” and was his FIRST contract. This was their license to act as Prince’s agent for $25,000 or more, for services for Sonograph, radio, recording, in a trial period to basically see if he was any good! It was sold at auction for $10,000 in 2007. TMZ did an article on this particular piece, offering it for $30,000. The founder and former head of CAA’s music department, Tom Ross, told TMZ they landed Prince by helping him close the deal for the “Purple Rain” movie and tour.
