Space Shuttle Columbia
(NASA orbiter) was the first space-rated space shuttle in the NASA fleet. It launched on April 12, 1981 and would have 28 mission, ending in tragedy in 2003. The tenth flight of Columbia was named “ASTRO-1, which launched December 2, 1990 and it was a mission devoted to astronomical observations, with ASTRO-1 being the Spacelab of four telescopes. The mission had a crew of seven. Here are two original first day issue caches, released December 2, 1990, which was the Crew Launch Cover. One was released from one post office on that one day in Houston Texas, and the other simultaneously released at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This second one bears the signatures of all seven of the astronauts of ASTRO-1, Columbia Mission: Commander Vance Brand, Pilot Guy Gardner, Mission Specialists Jeffrey Hoffman, John “Mike” Lounge, Robert Parker, Samuel Durance and Ronald Parise.
