Willem de Kooning (1904 – 1997)
Dutch-American abstract expressionist born in the Netherlands and moved to New York in 1927. In the post-World War II era, de Kooning painted in a style that came to be referred to as "action painting", and was part of a group of artists known as the "New York School”. Some of de Kooning's paintings have been sold in the 21st century for near record prices. Here is a signed, hand drawn sketch from his “Woman” series. The female figure was an important symbol for de Kooning's art career and his own life. His “Woman" paintings are considered significant works of art through their historical context about post-World War II history and the American feminist movement.
